About 13 years ago I spent 3 months studying in Belgium. Actually, traveling was the focus and passing courses rather than acing them was acceptable. While visiting new friends in Cologne, Germany, I noticed the norm for a family was to live in townhome if they where near town. At the time I did not understand this.
As the Germans where already well into increasing density in villages, I was still thinking bigger was better.
Putting on the thinking cap for a minute you can imagine all of the environmental benefits of this planning.
This direction also provides you with more free time. No need to spend hours on the lawn, shoveling snow etc. and when you can't walk, you'll find the drive is much shorter.
The municiple governments in Ontario are already working plans to increase density. A good example is near the Clarkson Go Train station, here you can see new condo and townhouse developments popping up just steps from shopping and transportation. This appeals to many of those that no longer can maintain there huge homes and those that do not have the time or desire to do so.
